Abstract: It is a key problem in conceptual design nowadays to appropriately carry through function representation and innovative reasoning. The concept of matter element network is proposed, which combines semantic network with matter element representation, and matter element network representation and its innovative reasoning mechanism are also introduced. By experiment compared with semantic network and matter element representation, it is proved that matter element network representation is able to better deal with function representation, extension and association, and to better promote the process of innovative reasoning.
