A Computational Model for Paper’s Folding, Cutting, and Unfolding

Abstract: For satisfying the requirements of interactive design of children's paper-cutting projects and demonstration of classic fold-and-cut processes, a computational model for simulating paper's folding, cutting, and unfolding is presented. The model consists of a data structure for geometrically and topologically representing the current paper configuration, a method for recording the process of operations, and a series of algorithms for implementing related functions. A prototype system named Virtual Paper is developed with the model as its core to test the feasibility of the model.
