Abstract: The iterative modification and flexibility of the 3D models of the aluminum profile extrusion dies are the key factors in their engineering application. In this paper, an optimized modeling method integrating the model discretization, hierarchical modeling and classified assembly is presented based on the analysis of the relationship between the structural characteristics of porthole dies and the method of 3D modeling combining with the die design process. Finally, the 3D modeling of the upper porhole die, based on the secondary-developed
UG NX5 platform, is provided as an instance. The least coupling of the 3D models verifies the feasibility of the optimized modeling method.
