Ankle-foot orthosis design based on parametric reverse modeling

Abstract: In order to realize the rapid and accurate modeling of the ankle-foot orthosis (AFO) and
improve the individualized customization efficiency of the orthosis and the wearing comfort of the
patient, a design method of the ankle-foot orthosis based on parametric reverse modeling was
proposed. The method used 3D scanning to obtain the original digital model of the foot and the calf.
The acquired basic digital model was established through the point cloud data processing and
optimization. The personalized shape feature data points are extracted by Grasshopper to reestablish
the ankle-foot orthosis digital model. A six-stage AFO parametric reverse modeling program was
created, and customized design of AFO can be realized by changing parameters. Finally, the
feasibility of the proposed method was verified by a case of customized design of AFO for stroke
patient.
